What to Expect
A reconnection or an introduction to the practice of vinyasa.
Many people say vinyasa is too fast, too challenging, or too complicated, but so many of them lack the basic understanding of what the practice is, where it came from, and how it can help change their lives.
Each week, the class structure is the same. Although intended to be experienced as a full practice with all four workshops, each workshop is also designed to be taken on its own for those only interested in particular poses or focus points.
Week 1 tackles some common questions: What makes vinyasa any different than other forms of yoga? What’s the difference between a Cobra and an Upward Dog? What is “a” vinyasa as compared to the style name? Come prepared to learn the most common poses seen in a vinyasa class to help you feel more prepared the next time you’re in one.
❋ Week 1 Overview❋ Week 2 OverviewWeek 2 brings the focus all into the structure of a vinyasa class. What is a Sun Salutation A? How is it different than a Sun Salutation B? When do classes offer a Sun Salutation C? This week dives deeper into all the expectations you may find in a vinyasa class, and breaks down some of the most common standing poses in the practice, including the different Warrior poses.
If you’ve ever felt that you weren’t “strong enough” to make it through a vinyasa practice, Week 3 is for you. Many other forms of yoga (including Bikram) focus more on compression movements, which serve a purpose in their own right. Vinyasa, however, allows you to expand more into your lateral line and side body, which is what we’ll focus on this week. Prepare to try on a few different plank variations and get ready to lengthen your side body!
❋ Week 3 OverviewOne of the biggest challenges students find in vinyasa classes is balance poses, whether standing on one foot or using their hands as support. Week 4 brings the focus into all things balance—but just on one foot. While arm balances have a place in the practice, it’s more practical and functional to be able to stand on one foot. None of us are getting any younger, and this is the most vital practice you can attend if your focus is longevity.
❋ Week 4 OverviewWeekly Structure
Every workshop opens with some information to help you deepen your practice. Whether that’s defining useful terms, sharing myths of the poses, or connections to other modern-day practices, the workshops open with 15-20 minutes of knowledge to help you connect to the vinyasa practice on a deeper level.
❋ Deepen Your KnowledgeFollowing the Deepen Your Knowledge section, each workshop includes a number of poses dedicated to the corresponding day, which we’ll break down. We’ll discuss anatomical variations, modifications to make the poses more accessible for beginners or those working with injuries, and hands-on assists to help you find the alignment of the pose for the body you’re in today.
❋ Deepen Your PracticeYoga teachers frequently discuss finding the “edge” between “ease” and “effort,” but that can be hard to suss out for yourself—especially when you’re learning. Outside of the posture clinics in the Deepen Your Practice section, workshops will also include an FAQ for practitioners to ask any leftover burning questions, as well as other ways to make the practice more accessible to them.
❋ Find Your Warrior's EdgeAny Warrior’s Edge event or workshop welcomes people of all sizes, shapes, and experience levels. There is no judgment in these spaces. All practitioners and students are here to learn, grow, and deepen their practice. You will not be shamed for doing any poses “wrong,” though you may be called on at any point to have adjustments done while the other students watch.
❋ Experience A Supportive SpaceTrain with intention. Live with purpose.
